Rehoming a horse
|
With many horses being given over to charities in recent years, if you're thinking of taking on a pony or horse, it's worth considering rehoming a horse.
This July is World Horse Welfare's Rehoming a Horse month. They run this scheme continually but put extra emphasis on it at this time of year. Every week, a horse or pony is featured on their website and there are some wonderful equines looking for a home. You can find out how much one family in Scotland have got from fostering ponies here
As with any animal, horses are unpredictable. A new environment can change their character or cause their behaviour to change as they settle into a new home, for instance. But these are helpful definitions of purpose for taking on a rescue horse.

There are a number of horse charities around the UK who look for people to rehome horses, including those charities caring for retired racehorses. If you can help, either by rehoming a horse or telling people about them, that would be a great help to horses.
Can't foster?
There are plenty of other ways you can get stuck in to helping horses, such as supporting World Horse Welfare's campaign to halt the long distance transport of horses to slaughter - click here to see how you can take action to help.
