World Wetlands Day This is an annual event on 2 February. Join in a worldwide event by taking part in the World Wetlands Day.  The WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) has a number of wetlands events in the UK and you can visit Ramsar.org (named after a treaty signed to commit members to maintaining the ecological character of their wetlands and to use them wisely.  Find out why wetlands are important here and discover how you can get involved in protecting wetlands here
Birds This weekend (28 and 29 January 2012) is the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, organised by the RSPB.  Can you spend a peaceful hour watching the birds in your garden or local park and report back online on what you see? There's a simple guide of what to look for  Last year over 609,177 million people in the UK took part and they counted over 10,200,000 birds! The survey gives the  RSPB critcal info to help them help species which are booming and which are floundering - here are the 2011 results.  And don't forget the Big Schools Birdwatch too from 16 to 30 January
Sharks There's good news for sharks from Asia as one leading hotel group removes shark fin from its offerings.  Find out how you can help sharks.

Pandas On Sunday 4 December, Giant Pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang arrived at Edinburgh Zoo.  While they are in Scotland, they will enjoy panda cake and also tons of bamboo from Scotland and the Netherlands.  But what of pandas in the wild?  US based charity Pandas International have an appeal to raise funds so that local farmers can grow bamboo in Sichuan after the earthquake of May 2008, as wild pandas in China are suffering from a lack of food.  Find out more from Pandas International
Nature  Step up for nature.  The RSPB reports an amazing one million steps taken to help nature this year since the Stepping up for Nature programme was introduced.  Find out how you can get involved from today!

Rescued primates If you fancy a stint of international volunteer travel, then what about the chance to volunteer with rescued primates in South Africa?
Hedgehogs Used postage stamps are collected and then sold by a number of animal charities, including the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.  They need your used stamps, and also your old money, gold & silver jewellery (broken and old).  Find out more here

  • WASH YOUR HANDS after touching animals BEFORE eating or snacking. (It could be a good idea to take some antiseptic wipes or handwash with you, just in case loo facilities don't provide soap.) Do not let children put their fingers into their mouths or suck thumbs after touching animals - it's common sense!
  • The amount of contact you can have with animals varies from one place to another & one animal to another. Common sense must prevail.
  • Before you visit places, check that there are no current regulations/conditions which could mean that they are closed. Also check for opening hours.
  • Take your rubbish home with you, at animals' requests
