Pets On Holiday

Dogs allowed at many cottages

Pets and holidays....

Pets are part of the family,so what do you do about them when you head off for your holiday or vacation? Think about your pet's needs and ability to handle change; and plan well in advance.  Good carers for pets get booked up fast.

Consider your own pet when planning your travel arrangements.  Some animals travel better than others.  If your pet gets car sick, your vet may be able to help. Put your pet's needs first above your own wishes.

Your options include:

  • Arranging for friends, family or neighbours to come and live in with your pets or just pop in as required
  • Enlisting the services of a company providing a pet sitter, such as Homesitters or people who provide a "popping in" service to look after pets - check references
  • Putting your pets in kennels, catteries or “hotels” created for animals. Plan ahead - they get booked up. Visit first before booking.
  • Taking your pets with you!

Many places take pets - you just need to hunt them out! For dog owners, this means that you can keep up your daily walkies and have the joy of watching your dog explore pastures new and sniff out lovely new smells.

He won't want to go home. (Pet lifejackets are strongly recommended and you may be able to pre-order them from the boatyard prior to departure.)  Scottish Lochs, canals & rivers and the Norfolk Broads to explore in the UK.

Country Cottages galore are available with Hoseasons and many accept well behaved pets.  There's an easy to use search facility to find somewhere fab to stay in England, Wales or ScotlandOr may be you'd prefer a lodge to stay in?  Lots of special deals for May 2009 holiday time, so check out your options quickly.

Hoseasons also have many villas for you and your pooch to enjoy.  In France, Provence, the Loire and Burgundy, the Atlantic Coast, Normandy and Brittany, the Dordogne and Lot are just a few examples of places where you and your dog can enjoy special quality time together.

Want to take your pet abroad?

Check out the Pets’ Passport requirements early  - there is a long lead time before your pet can travel, and much to be done.

If you live abroad and need to return back home, or move elsewhere, consider how long it will take to have the necessary paperwork and vet's work done before you can travel with your pet.  Many British who have been living in Spain and who have had to return to the UK to live, have underestimated the time it takes to sort out their pet's passport.  The consequences often make sad reading for pet and owner, so take action and be prepared for any eventuality.
