In the natural course of life, old age comes to us all. Illness comes to many along the way.
We have included a number of initiatives here to help make the last period of life more meaningful and to help those who have been ill get back on track again through interaction with animals and nature. |

The Cinnamon Trust
This charity strives to uphold the very unique and special bond between elderly people and their pets by offering voluntary help with pet care. Volunteers will either go into private homes or care homes. Their efforts mean all the difference between elderly people having to give up their much cherished pets. The same help is given to those who are terminally ill. Some volunteers foster pets for the elderly or terminally ill while they are in hospital or having respite care.
The Trust also has a very informative Guide, Pet Friendly Care Homes: Star Rated which lists homes throughout the UK that takes pets. For a copy, contact the Cinnamon Trust on 01736 757 900 or visit www.cinnamon.org.uk The Guide costs £3.50 plus postage and packing charges. |

The Eden Alternative
The Eden Alternative helps care homes alleviate the three plagues of old age (loneliness, boredom and helplessness) and helps invigorate elderly people through encouraging them to be more proactive in and around their home.
A typical example is that elderly people are given responsiblity for taking care of pets, growing their own vegetables and cooking their own food.
The opportunity to care for something or someone meaningful can make all the difference.
Visit www.eden-alternative.co.uk for more info - please note that the Eden Alternative is located in a number of countries, the US being its home base. |
Thrive
Thrive helps people with visual impairments or those who have had strokes and heart disease get active with gardening, and they've been doing it for some time. Visit www.thrive.org.uk for more info.
